Large-Scale Combined Attack
On the night of June 2, Ukraine was subjected to a massive combined strike by Russia. The attack began after 21:00 and lasted until morning. According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy used an unprecedented amount of weaponry, striking several cities, including the capital, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia.
In total, during the operation, Russian forces launched 73 missiles of various types and 656 attack drones. Ukraine's air defense (PVO) forces repelled a significant portion of the attack: 26 out of 27 Kh-101 cruise missiles, 3 out of 5 'Kalibr' missiles, and 602 drones were destroyed or suppressed.
Use of Newest Weapons
Experts paid special attention to the massive use of ballistic weaponry. As a result of the attack, 30 hits from ballistic missiles were recorded. Air defense managed to shoot down only 11 out of 33 launched 'Iskander-M' ballistic missiles.
Yuriy Ignat, Head of the Air Force Communications Department, reported a record simultaneous deployment of 'Zircon' hypersonic anti-ship missiles. During the attack, 8 such missiles were fired: 4 at night and another 4 in the morning. According to military sources, none of the 'Zircon' missiles were shot down.
Chronology and Targets of the Attack
The attack took place in several waves. First, the enemy used groups of drones, and closer to morning, switched to missile shelling. Strikes by 'Kalibr' cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea and air-to-surface missiles from Tu-160 and Tu-95MS aircraft alternated with launches of ballistic missiles.
Approximately between 02:15 and 03:00, the enemy struck Kyiv, Kharkiv, and allegedly Zaporizhzhia with ballistic missiles. A repeat attack on the capital with ballistic missiles was recorded in the morning around 07:20.
Consequences in Kyiv
The most destructive consequences were recorded in Kyiv. Strikes hit the Podilskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Obolonskyi, Solomianskyi, Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi, and Pecherskyi districts. Power outages were observed in some areas.
In the Podilskyi district, debris fell on the roof of a 9-story residential building, causing a fire. After a second hit, structures collapsed. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, debris hit a 24-story residential building, leading to fires on the 4th and 5th floors. Also in this district, a fire engulfed the first floor of a 5-story building.
In Obolon, debris fell near two kindergartens, causing fires at an unfinished construction site and igniting vehicles. In the Solomianskyi district, the second and third floors of a polyclinic building were destroyed. In the Darnytskyi district, a missile hit a 15-story residential building, damaging the upper floors, and a gas station and private houses also caught fire.
