A public campaign is gaining momentum in Kyiv to restore one of the capital's most devastated locations — the Lukyanivka market. City residents, whose daily lives were disrupted by a massive missile strike, have appealed to the authorities to immediately begin the reconstruction of the facility.
The catalyst for the activation of civic initiatives was the events of the night of May 24, 2026. During this period, Russia launched an attack on the capital that affected all districts of the city. However, the most severe destruction occurred in Lukyanivka. As a result of a direct hit, the "Kvadrat" shopping center and the famous Lukyanivka market were completely burned down. In addition to commercial facilities, a residential building and the vestibule of the "Lukyanivska" metro station were damaged.
A symbol of resilience and life in the district
For Kyiv residents, the market is not just a place of trade. In a petition posted on the Kyiv City Council website, the authors emphasize the deep social significance of the facility. According to them, it is part of the city's living history, a workplace for dozens of employees, and a source of affordable food for thousands of families.
"The Lukyanivka market is not just a commercial facility. It is part of Kyiv's living history, a workplace for dozens of people, a source of affordable food for thousands of residents, and an important element of the district's social life," the text of the appeal states.
The authors of the petition view the restoration of the market as an important step towards returning to normal life and a symbol of the city community's resilience in the face of trials.
Massive support for the initiative
The public reaction to the call for restoration was immediate and massive. Within one week, the document received more than 5,500 signatures. Such a high figure indicates that the issue of restoring the market is one of the priorities for the residents of the capital.
The signature collection is nearing completion: the petition has already gathered almost the necessary support to be mandatorily considered by the deputies of the Kyiv City Council. This means that the authorities will be forced to officially respond to the citizens' request and outline an action plan for eliminating the consequences of the destruction in Lukyanivka.
