An initiative capable of radically changing the capital's logistics is gaining momentum in Kyiv. On the Kyiv City Council website, a petition for the revival of river public transport is actively being signed. The idea is simple, but brilliant in its relevance: to use the Dnipro as a full-fledged transport artery, relieving pressure on ground highways.
The initiator of the appeal, Ruslan Dzhansuraev, points to an obvious fact: moving around the city during rush hour has turned into a trial. Constant repairs, the emergency state of bridges, and the absence of new metro stations since 2014 create a perfect storm for motorists and ground transport passengers.
The author of the petition proposes a non-standard way out of the deadlock. Instead of endless road and tunnel construction, which requires colossal budget injections, it is worth utilizing what already exists — the river. The Dnipro is capable of providing an alternative connection between the left and right banks, bypassing bridge congestion.
The initiative has already found a response: the petition has gathered more than 2,000 signatures, which is a third of the required threshold of 6,000 votes. There is only one month left until the end of the voting. In case of success, the relevant city hall departments will be obliged to consider the project.
At the same time, other urban issues are being discussed in Kyiv. For example, signatures are being collected to rename the 'Square of Ukrainian Heroes' metro station in honor of the dissident poet Vasyl Stus. Supporters of the idea believe that the current name is too abstract and does not reflect the historical memory of specific defenders of the country.
