On the night of August 16, 2026, Ukraine's largest mining and metallurgical enterprise, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, became the target of a large-scale rocket attack by the Russian armed forces. The incident occurred during the night when the factory grounds were subjected to intense shelling, leading to major fires and the destruction of critical production units.
Casualties and rescue operations
According to preliminary data from the company's press service, two people were killed in the tragedy. Another 13 employees of the plant and representatives of contracting organizations sustained injuries of varying severity. Immediately after the strike, an emergency response plan was activated. All available rescue forces were dispatched to the scene: firefighters, rescue workers, medical personnel, and occupational safety specialists. Search and rescue operations are currently ongoing, as the exact number of casualties may change depending on the results of the debris assessment.
Scale of material damage and production halt
The attack caused significant damage to the plant's infrastructure. Key production facilities for energy and blast furnace operations were damaged. Consequently, the plant was forced to partially suspend production processes. Company specialists have already begun assessing the extent of the damage, as well as calculating the timelines and possibilities for restoring equipment functionality. The plant's energy block, which ensures the operation of the blast furnaces, was hit, making the resumption of operations in the short term a difficult task.
Historical context: repeating the 2022 scenario
This is not the first case of a rocket strike on ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih by Russia. The enterprise has already suffered devastating attacks in 2022. At that time, a rolling mill was completely destroyed as a result of the attack, and one employee was killed. Plant management emphasizes that the enterprise is a civilian object of the mining and metallurgical industry and firmly condemns such treacherous enemy attacks, which endanger the lives of workers and the stability of the country's industrial sector.
