The night of July 6 became one of the heaviest for Ukraine in recent times. Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack, resulting in damage to Kyiv and the Kyiv region. Numerous hits on residential areas were recorded in the capital, people were killed, and homes were destroyed. Authorities declared July 7 a Day of Mourning.
Scale of the attack and air defense operations
According to the Air Force of Ukraine, during the night of July 6, the enemy used 419 air attack means: 68 missiles and 351 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Ukrainian air defense system shot down or suppressed 363 targets: 31 Kh-101 missiles, 6 Kalibr missiles, and 326 UAVs.
Nevertheless, the impact of 29 ballistic missiles (including anti-ship missiles) and 18 strike drones was recorded at 34 locations. Debris from shot-down drones fell on another 16 territories.
Situation in Kyiv: Podilskyi and Darnytskyi districts
According to Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City State Administration, work to eliminate the consequences is continuing at more than 20 locations. About 30 residential buildings in the city are significantly damaged. The most difficult situation is in the Podilskyi and Darnytskyi districts.
In the Podilskyi district, a missile hit a nine-story residential building. The impact destroyed part of the entrance. Currently, there are 5 dead and more than 30 injured there.
In the Darnytskyi district, a missile fell into the courtyard between buildings. The attack claimed the lives of 6 residents. Among the 28 saved were two 4-year-old children. Rescuers continue to clear the rubble.
A 21-story building was also damaged, where partial destruction occurred between floors. According to the State Emergency Service (SES), 17 people were taken out of the damaged building into the fresh air, and another 28 were rescued from the upper floors.
Witnesses and consequences
RBC-Ukraine correspondents visited the scene in the Darnytskyi and Podilskyi districts. One of the women showed the place where her apartment was located just yesterday. After the hit, only a huge hole remained there. According to her, that night she and her husband were at their dacha, and that is exactly what saved their lives.
The photo shows how the area around the building is cordoned off, and rescue services are working in an enhanced mode. A construction crane has been brought in to help clear the rubble on the upper floors of the building.
In the area, the building roof and the elevator shaft were on fire, there was partial destruction of the roof of a 19-story building, cars were burning, and debris fell on a 25-story building. Also, after the debris fell, a fire broke out on the 23rd–25th floors of a 30-story residential building. A garage cooperative was also on fire.
In the Obolonskyi district, a warehouse and another building caught fire, and a hit was recorded on the territory of non-residential construction. In the Holosiivskyi district, preliminary data indicates that a non-residential building was on fire.
Updates on casualties
As of 14:50, the number of dead in Kyiv reached 13. In the Podilskyi district, rescuers de-blocked the body of a deceased man. Information about 56 injured people has also been confirmed.
Local authorities reported that 12 people died in the capital, and more than 50 were injured. Rescuers continue to clear the rubble; people may be trapped under it.
Vishneve: epicenter of the attack in the Kyiv region
As of 13:59, the number of victims in the Kyiv region rose to 6. As of 12:40, the number of dead from the attack in the region reached 5 people, and another 21 people are in the hospital.
In Vishneve, more than 600 people were evacuated, of whom 117 were in a shelter that turned out to be right in the epicenter of the explosion. The strike on Vishneve destroyed almost five streets; 479 people have already been evacuated due to the threat of detonation, reported the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Mykola Kalashnyk.
According to him, as a result of the attack, dozens of houses were damaged, fires are continuing, and detonations are audible. So far, 26 people are known to be injured, three of them are in critical condition. Among the injured are a 9-month-old infant and a 12-year-old child. Three people died.
Due to heavy smoke, air quality deteriorated 5 times; residents are urged not to open windows and to follow the recommendations of specialists.
Rooms in Vishneve where the units of the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in the region and a remote access point in the Bucha State Tax Inspectorate are located were also damaged. Operations there have been temporarily suspended.
Day of Mourning in Kyiv
July 7 has been declared a Day of Mourning in Kyiv. On this day, flags will be lowered on municipal buildings in the capital. It is also recommended to lower state flags on buildings of state and private ownership. Any entertainment events in the city have been canceled.
