Ukrainian national team forward Roman Yaremchuk has been left out of the official squad for Greek club Olympiacos for the third qualifying round matches of the Champions League. This was reported by Sport RBC.UA, citing the official UEFA website.
The Piraeus-based club published the list of players eligible to participate in the matches against Dutch side N.E.C. Nijmegen. The games are scheduled for August 4 and 11. Roman Yaremchuk did not make the final squad. Meanwhile, Olympiacos' coaching staff opted for five other strikers, effectively blocking the Ukrainian's path to playing in European competitions.
Unexpected Decision Amid Successful Preparation
The decision comes as somewhat of a surprise given the summer preparation period, during which Yaremchuk regularly received playing time. The forward participated in six friendly matches for the Piraeus team, starting twice and even scoring a goal against Polish club Raków (2-1).
The previous season was mixed for the 30-year-old striker. Starting his campaign in Greece, he made only one substitute appearance in the Champions League against Barcelona. The second half of the season, the Ukrainian spent on loan at French club Lyon, though the club decided not to exercise the option to buy his contract.
Statistics and Future at the Club
In total, since joining Olympiacos in the summer of 2024, Yaremchuk has scored 14 goals and provided 5 assists in 49 matches, winning the Greek championship and cup with the team. However, his omission from the European squad only confirms rumors: despite a contract valid until 2028, Olympiacos and the player are close to terminating their partnership early this summer.
