In the city of Galați, in southern Romania, a diplomatic and technical dispute has erupted, closely linked to events on the Ukrainian front. A Russian drone that destroyed the roof of a residential building and caused a fire did not simply "fly into" the neighboring country — it was shot down over Ukraine and, losing control, crashed onto Romanian territory. This was personally stated by Romanian President Nicolae Iohannis, who visited the victims.
Accidental Target or Kinetic Strike?
According to the head of state, the incident occurred during a massive attack when 43 drones were launched from the east. They flew along the Danube, at an altitude of 20–30 km from the river. Some of them were shot down by Ukrainian air defense. One of the drones, likely damaged over the city of Reni, changed its trajectory and fell in Galați.
"It was a kinetic strike — the drone was damaged, lost stability, and flew towards Romania," Iohannis explained. That is, it was not about intentional redirection, but about the physical destruction of the device in the air.
Why Couldn't Romania Intercept the Drone?
Romanian military officials admitted: from the moment the drone was detected until it crashed, only four minutes passed. This time is insufficient to deploy an air defense system, especially if it concerns low-visibility drones like the "Geran-2." Brigadier General Gheorghe Maxim emphasized that the response system simply did not have time to react.
Why Is NATO Hesitant to Deliver?
President Iohannis also touched upon the issue of supplying anti-drone systems from NATO. He called it a "complex technical issue." The fact is that when intercepting a drone from Romanian territory, it must be guaranteed that debris or missiles will not hit residential buildings or cross the border with Ukraine — which could be interpreted as a violation of sovereignty.
"There are many conditions: citizen safety, compliance with international law, minimizing risks for neighbors," he added.
Kyiv's Reaction and Moscow's Silence
Ukrainian President's Advisor Mykhailo Podolyak confirmed that Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already discussed the incident with Nicolae Iohannis. "No additional comments are needed," he said. This may mean that Kyiv does not consider the situation critical and does not plan a public reaction.
Moscow has not yet commented on the incident. However, the fact remains a fact: a Russian drone, shot down by Ukrainian air defense, caused a fire in a Romanian house and injured two people. This is another reminder of how the war in Ukraine affects all of Europe — even where there are no hostilities.
