On the night of August 1, Russia launched an unprecedented massive strike against Ukrainian territory. According to Ukrainian authorities, the enemy launched 35 missiles and 185 attack unmanned aerial vehicles. The main strike hit the Kyiv region, but the Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Poltava regions were also under fire.
Critical Shortage of Air Defense Assets
The situation on the air front proved critical. Of the 35 missiles launched, 27 were ballistic missiles. According to official data, air defense systems managed to shoot down only one of them. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly pointed to the cause of the failure: a catastrophic shortage of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems.
"It is precisely this shortage of interceptors against ballistic missiles that encourages Russia to launch such strikes against life," the head of state stated. According to him, the lack of sufficient means of destruction makes the sky over Ukraine vulnerable to high-precision strikes.
Scale of the Attack and Consequences
As of 09:30 AM on August 1, air defense forces recorded the destruction or suppression of 156 targets: two missiles and 154 drones. However, this did not prevent tragedies on the ground. According to preliminary information, direct hits were recorded at 21 locations: 4 anti-ship and 26 ballistic missiles, as well as 23 attack drones. Debris from downed targets fell at two more locations. Three missiles failed to reach their targets.
The most affected region was Kyiv. As a result of the attack, nine people were killed and another 30 were injured, including four children. Destruction and fires were recorded in five districts of the capital: Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Dniprovska, and Pechersk.
Responsibility and Threats
The attack on the night of August 1 was one of the largest in recent times. The massive use of ballistic missiles and drones demonstrates that Russia continues to increase the intensity of strikes against civilian infrastructure. At the same time, Ukrainian leadership emphasizes that without additional assistance from Western partners, the situation with sky protection will only worsen.
The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine continues to work on eliminating the consequences of the strikes and searching for the injured. Authorities urge citizens to comply with safety measures and not approach the sites where debris has fallen.
