On the morning of September 17, 2026, Russian occupiers struck a shopping mall in Kharkiv with a drone. This was reported in his Telegram channel by Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, as noted by RBC-Ukraine citing his statement. According to him, the attack hit the Osnova district of the city.
Strike on the Osnova district
Syniehubov clarified that as a result of the Russian UAV impact, the shopping mall building caught fire. The head of the Regional Administration emphasized that, according to preliminary data, at the time of the strike, staff and visitors were in a shelter — this, according to him, is what prevented casualties. A number of media outlets, including the 24 Channel, note that this refers to the "Episenter" shopping mall — the last surviving facility of the chain in the city.
Situation on site and emergency services' work
At 10:01, Syniehubov published an update: according to preliminary data, there were no casualties as a result of the enemy strike on the shopping mall in the Osnova district. At the same time, he emphasized that information on the consequences is still being clarified, and emergency services are "working in an enhanced mode" and continue to remain at the impact site. Thus, at the time of the official statements being published, there were no confirmed data on casualties or the injured.
Against the backdrop of the morning attack, Kharkiv mayor Ihor Terekhov reported a confirmed impact also in the Slobidsky district of the city. In addition, during the night of September 17, it became known that Russian occupiers destroyed a railway station in Kharkiv Oblast. These episodes complement the picture of a multi-vector attack on the region's infrastructure within a single day.
Context: night wave of UAV attacks
The strike on the shopping mall was a continuation of the night wave of attacks. As RBC-Ukraine reported, during the night of September 17, air defense forces neutralized 131 enemy targets, predominantly "Shahed" drones and UAV decoys. The scale of the night attack indicates an attempt by the enemy to simultaneously overload air defense systems and damage civilian infrastructure in the morning hours.
