On the night of September 28 to 29, the world once again witnessed an escalation of tension on the border between NATO and Russia. During another drone attack on southern regions of Ukraine, one of the unmanned aerial vehicles crossed the state border and crashed onto the roof of a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați. This incident posed a serious challenge to the security of the alliance.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the country's radars detected the drone's intrusion into the airspace over the southern part of Galați. The unmanned vehicle, heading towards Ukrainian border facilities, either lost control or was shot down, subsequently crashing into a multi-story apartment building. A fire immediately broke out at the site, quickly engulfing an apartment on the 10th floor.
Specialized teams from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), the Romanian intelligence service, and the police immediately arrived at the scene. According to the authorities, two people were injured as a result of the drone crash and received assistance on site. The fire was contained and extinguished within a short period.
In response to the airspace violation, Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter. Pilots were authorized to engage targets throughout the duration of the alert. This demonstrated the alliance's readiness to respond to any threats, even if they are accidental in nature.
Romanian authorities emphasize that their radars constantly monitor activity near the border. On the night of the incident, several drones were detected flying in close proximity to the country's airspace. This confirms that Russia continues to use unmanned aerial vehicles to attack civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, creating risks for neighboring states.
The incident in Galați occurred against the backdrop of an active drone attack on the Odesa region. Russian forces continue to use drones as their primary tool for striking Ukrainian cities, leading to unpredictable consequences for neighboring countries. As a NATO member, Romania is obligated to protect its airspace and respond to any violations.
This case once again underscores that the war in Ukraine has far-reaching consequences for all of Europe. A Russian drone violating the NATO border is not merely a technical error but a serious signal that the conflict could spill over beyond Ukraine and affect other nations.
