The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation has initiated legal proceedings against Kazakhstani businessman and founder of Freedom Holding Corp. Timur Turlov, who was elected as the new President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in late September 2026. According to independent and specialized sources, the pretext for harsh measures by Russian supervisory agencies may be the extensive funding of Ukraine and Ukrainian humanitarian initiatives following the onset of the full-scale invasion.
According to financial reporting materials and media investigations submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Timur Turlov's personal donations to Ukraine amounted to approximately 2.5 million dollars. Another 3 million dollars were allocated by Freedom Holding Corp. structures. Representatives of the holding emphasize that the company severed all ties with the Russian market well in advance, completely selling its assets in the Russian Federation in 2022 to management led by Maxim Povalishin for 140 million dollars.
FIDE Election and Political Context
A new wave of pressure from Russian departments unfolded just days after Timur Turlov's triumph on the international stage. During the FIDE presidential elections held on September 26, 2026, the businessman secured a confident victory in the second round, garnering 110 votes against 85 for his opponent Vadim Rosenstein. Turlov succeeded Russia's representative Arkady Dvorkovich in this responsible position, a move already hailed as a tectonic shift in world chess sports. Moreover, shortly after this personnel decision, Mikhail Podolyak, advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, became FIDE Vice President.
Controversial Data
It is worth noting that certain discrepancies remain in the information space regarding the exact legal qualification of the Russian Prosecutor General's claims. While some publications and experts speak of attempts to recognize the holding's activities or the businessman himself as extremist with the subsequent confiscation of potential remaining assets, official representatives of Freedom Holding declare that they have no material base or commercial activity in the Russian Federation. The company's management openly states that it sees no direct threats to its international business, but continues to monitor the situation.
International Consequences and Business Reaction
The expert community and sports analysts agree that the Russian side's lawsuit is exclusively politically motivated and closely linked to the shift in the balance of power within the FIDE leadership. Timur Turlov himself is a citizen of Kazakhstan, where he moved in 2011, and in the spring of 2022, he finally renounced his Russian passport. His company has been successfully traded on the American NASDAQ exchange since 2019 and strictly adheres to global compliance standards, making attempts at external pressure by the Russian Federation legally negligible for the holding's foreign jurisdiction.
