A new line of defense is forming around the Russian capital. Satellite imagery confirms the appearance of S-400 surface-to-air missile system positions, designed to intercept ballistic missiles. Experts have paid particular attention to the location of one such position: it is located less than 10 kilometers from the Kremlin, on the territory of an innovative scientific and technical center.
New Architecture of Moscow's Defense
According to data published by RBK-Ukraine citing Radio Liberty, the new air defense ring differs significantly from previous stages of construction. If previously the emphasis was on "Pantsir" systems installed on towers to combat drones, the current priority is the interception of ballistic targets. Experts link this step to Ukraine's active development of its own missile technologies.
A key position has been discovered on Vorobyovy Gory. The choice of this location is dictated by tactical considerations: the natural elevation allows radars to detect aerial targets at greater distances and earlier. On a site of about 4.5 hectares, in mid-May, a concrete platform appeared, on which S-300/400 launchers and a specialized 40V6MR tower were placed.
Intersection of Politics and Business
The territory where the air defense systems are deployed belongs to the "Innopraktika" Foundation — an organization headed by Ekaterina Tikhonova, the youngest daughter of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is the foundation's flagship project, positioned as an innovative scientific and technical center.
The situation gained additional resonance against the backdrop of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). While Ekaterina Tikhonova was telling forum participants via video link about innovative railway wheels and domestic analogues of imported medicines, sirens sounded in St. Petersburg. The city was subjected to Ukrainian drone attacks; the port and the Navy base in Kronstadt were damaged.
Scaling the System
The deployment of powerful systems in close proximity to the country's administrative center confirms theses about the redistribution of military resources. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently stated that hundreds of S-400, S-500, and "Pantsir" launchers are concentrated around Moscow, while in other regions of Russia, their numbers have been reduced to a minimum.
Thus, the construction of a new air defense ring, including facilities on the territory of commercial and scientific structures, indicates that the protection of the capital has become the top priority, even if it requires the integration of military objects into the infrastructure of civilian projects.
