Donetsk's Shakhtar secured a hard-fought victory over Kovalivka's Kolos in the ninth round of the Ukrainian Premier League. Arda Turan's side scored twice in the first half, but allowed the opponent to narrow the gap late in the game, with the match ending featuring three goals and a red card for one of the visiting players. The final score was 2:1 in favor of Donetsk, who maintained sole leadership in the Ukrainian championship.

Rotation Ahead of Inter

The encounter with Kolos was the Miners' second match in four days, and the tight schedule forced the coaching staff to implement significant squad rotation. As many as eight new players entered the pitch from the first minutes, which could have affected the pace and setup. Nevertheless, Shakhtar quickly seized the initiative and did not let the personnel changes disrupt their control of the game.

Milestone Goal and Double Advantage

The scoring was opened as early as the 10th minute: Vinicius Tobias shifted from the flank closer to the penalty area and sent the ball into the near corner of Ivan Pakholyuk's net with a precise strike. This goal became a milestone for the Donetsk club — Shakhtar's 1,250th home goal in the history of appearances in Ukrainian championships. In the 36th minute, the hosts doubled their advantage: Ehor Nazaryna delivered a free-kick cross, and Valeriy Bondar finished the attack with a scoring shot.

Kolos Restores Suspense

In the second half, Donetsk maintained their obtained advantage for a long time, yet the guests did not abandon attempts to change the course of the confrontation. In the 84th minute, following a ball interception, Kolos players organized a quick attack, which was concluded by Kosovan forward Ardit Tahiri with a goal. The conceded goal revived the suspense, as the guests only needed one more goal to rescue a draw. In the 90th minute, Kolos's situation worsened: team captain Andriy Tsurikov received a red card, leaving the team a man down.

Leadership and Focus on the Champions League

Ultimately, Shakhtar held on to the winning result and achieved their eighth victory in nine championship matches. Donetsk increased their tally to 24 points and retained sole leadership in the UPL. Now, Arda Turan's team can focus on the Champions League: already on Wednesday, October 21, the Miners will play away against Italian side Inter Milan.
