New base for European competitions
Dnipro-based "Shakhtar" has made a final decision on the venue for home matches in the upcoming European competition season. The Ukrainian champion will host opponents in London. This became known from a comment by the club's head coach, Arda Turan, who shared details with the publication Fanatik.
Initially, the plans of the management and coaching staff were aimed at returning to Turkey. The idea was to play games in front of passionate Turkish fans who traditionally support the team. However, bureaucratic realities made adjustments to these ambitious plans.
UEFA obstacles
The main reason for rejecting the Turkish venue was the strict regulatory requirements of UEFA. Arda Turan stated directly that the rules of the European football union create serious difficulties for organizing games in Turkey. Despite the fact that holding matches in cities such as Geztepe, Bursa, or Eskisehir seemed like an ideal scenario, it was not possible to implement it.
"It seems we will play in London. We wanted to come to Turkey, but UEFA requirements create big difficulties. Otherwise, playing in front of Turkish fans would be great. Nothing can be done," the coach noted, calling on fans — both Ukrainian and Turkish — to support the team in the British capital.
Candidates for the new arena
Although the final name of the stadium has not yet been officially approved, a list of potential venues has already been formed. The home stadiums of leading London clubs are being considered as the main candidates. In particular, the "miners" may play at "Stamford Bridge" — the legendary arena of "Chelsea". The stadiums of "Brentford" and "Fulham" are also on the list of possible locations.
The start of the main round of the Champions League is scheduled for September, leaving the club little time to finalize agreements with landlords. This step will be an important stage in the team's adaptation to the new conditions of international tournaments.
