Significant personnel changes have taken place in Ukrainian football. Andriy Shevchenko, head of the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF), explained in detail why the choice fell on Andrea Malderra. As it turns out, this decision was not made overnight and is based on a deep understanding of the specifics of Ukrainian football.
Synergy of Experience and Knowledge
According to the UAF President, the key factor was the unique competence of the Italian specialist. Malderra is not just a "foreigner with a diploma," but a man who has lived and worked in the Ukrainian football space for five years. Previously, he was part of Shevchenko's staff, which gave him invaluable insight into the mentality and structure of domestic sports.
"When a foreign coach comes to a new country, it is critically important that he understands the local specifics. Andrea knows this vertical: from youth teams to the main national team. He understands how the transition between levels works," Shevchenko noted in an interview with the "Bombardir" channel.
Knowledge Base and European Level
In addition to local experience, Malderra possesses a colossal knowledge base regarding Ukrainian players. Together with Shevchenko, they spent years analyzing domestic league games and studying the careers of foreign players in detail. This allows the new head coach to avoid wasting time on "scouting" and immediately build a strategy.
At the same time, Malderra's career did not stop in Ukraine. After working in Kyiv, he moved to a new level, becoming an assistant to Roberto De Zerbi and working in three leading European leagues. Today, we see a 55-year-old mature professional with a clear vision of the game and ambitions.
Who Made the Decision?
The question of who exactly chose the coach was also clarified. Despite the fact that the national team players warmly remember Malderra as a tactician and communicator, their opinion was not the deciding factor. Shevchenko emphasized that the decision was made exclusively within the UAF.
"I consulted only with the Executive Committee. The players did not influence this process," the association president stated categorically.
Test of Strength
Theory will soon be tested by practice. Andrea Malderra's first match as head coach of the Ukraine national team will take place on May 31 in Wroclaw against Poland. And on June 7, the team will travel to Denmark for a friendly match. Fans will see whether the new coach can realize his ambitions on the field and win the love of the fans.
