The grass season in professional tennis requires not only technical preparation but also steel nerves. For Ukrainian tennis player Diana Shnaider (50th in the world), the WTA 250 tournament in British Nottingham began with an unexpected twist and a serious test of endurance.
Officially, the Odessa native's opponent in the first round was supposed to be Frenchwoman Loïs Boisson. However, shortly before the match began, the French representative was forced to withdraw from the competition due to a left leg injury. Her place in the main draw was taken by Briton Alicia Dudeney, who received "lucky loser" status after a failure in qualifying. The tennis players had never met on the court before, but the confrontation with an unknown opponent turned into a real test of nerves for Shnaider.
Battle for Every Game
The match, which lasted 1 hour and 32 minutes, demonstrated that one cannot relax even against opponents with a lower ranking. In the first set, Diana started the game from a less than ideal position, losing to her opponent with a break. However, the Ukrainian managed to seize the initiative in time. The key factor in success was high efficiency on the first serve — Shnaider won 88% of points. Realizing both of her break points, she finished the first set with a score of 6:4.
The second set turned out to be much more dramatic. The game unfolded according to a scenario critical for the Ukrainian: Alicia Dudeney, inspired by the support of the home crowd, managed to take the lead with a score of 3:5. At this moment, Diana's signature character was revealed on the court. She did not just make up for the deficit but also equalized the score, taking the set to a decisive tie-break.
Decisive Tie-Break and Victory Statistics
In the decisive moment, Shnaider left the Briton no chance to continue the fight. Immediately securing two mini-breaks, the Ukrainian took a confident lead of 5:2 and brought the match to victory with a score of 7:6 (7:2). The final statistics of the encounter confirm the reliability of the winner's game: during the match, Shnaider made 2 aces, committed only one double fault, and realized 3 breaks.
Importance of Ranking Points and Opponent in the Round of 16
The victory in Nottingham has strategic significance for Diana. Last season, she reached the final on a grass surface for the first time in her career at this very tournament, and now she is forced to defend important ranking points. Any defeat here could have cost her positions in the world classification.
In the next round, in the round of 16, Shnaider awaits a serious test in the form of experienced German Tatjana Maria (117th in the world). The tennis players have played against each other only once — in 2023 at the tournament in Hua Hin, where the German representative won. Thus, Diana has an excellent chance for revenge.
The week in Nottingham turned out to be successful for Ukrainian tennis as a whole. We remind you that earlier another Ukrainian — Yuliya Starodubtseva (59th in the world) — advanced to the second round of the competition, adding depth to the country's representation at the prestigious tournament.
