On the sidelines of the G7 summit, an important meeting took place between the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Sybiga, and the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. The dialogue focused on the resumption of peace efforts and the specific steps necessary to compel Russian leader Vladimir Putin to sit at the negotiating table.
Linking the Iranian Scenario to the Ukrainian Conflict
Sibiga began the conversation by congratulating Rubio on the signing of the agreement between the US and Iran. The Minister expressed hope that this document would ensure stability in the region and normalize the situation in energy markets. According to the Ukrainian diplomat, success in negotiations with Tehran sets a precedent for resuming peace initiatives under the auspices of Washington aimed at ending Russia's war against Ukraine.
Recall that earlier, US President Donald Trump confirmed the achievement of an agreement with Iran. According to the terms of the deal, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened, and the US Navy will lift the naval blockade. In exchange, Tehran has pledged to abandon the development and acquisition of nuclear weapons. The signing ceremony for this document is scheduled for June 19 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Strategy of "Peace Through Strength" and Protection of Identity
A key item on the agenda was the discussion of ways to advance the peace process. Sibiga voiced Kyiv's position regarding the steps that should lead Moscow to negotiations. Separately, he informed his American colleague about the recent strikes by Russian forces on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and other civilian objects.
"They demonstrate that Moscow is waging a war against faith, heritage, and Ukrainian identity," emphasized the Head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The diplomat also reported to Rubio on the recent successes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the front lines and argued for the necessity of further sanctions pressure on the Russian economy.
Dependence on US Leadership
Concluding the meeting, Andriy Sibiga noted a growing momentum towards achieving peace through strength. According to him, Ukraine relies on the decisive leadership and engagement of the United States in resolving the conflict.
