Apple has moved from theoretical announcements to the practical implementation of its ambitious artificial intelligence plans. The company has officially opened access to testing the new generation Siri voice assistant, integrated with the Apple Intelligence ecosystem. This innovation is now available to developers who have installed the third beta version of the watchOS 27 operating system. This step marks the transition of technologies first presented at WWDC 2026 into the stage of real-world use on wearable devices.

Hybrid Architecture: How AI Works on Watches

The main technological challenge in implementing advanced neural networks in smartwatches was the physical limitations of their hardware. Current Apple Watch models are equipped with approximately 1 GB of RAM, whereas launching Apple's foundational models (Apple Foundation Models) locally requires between 8 and 12 GB. To bypass this limitation, Apple engineers developed a hybrid scheme for distributing computational load.

In the new watchOS 27 architecture, smartwatches act as a terminal: they receive the audio signal, display the graphical interface, and output responses to the user. The assistant is launched via a dedicated Siri app, which is now located in the center of the updated Dynamic App Grid.

However, all the "heavy" work of processing complex contextual queries and running machine learning algorithms is delegated to the smartphone. For the system to work, a paired iPhone with Apple A17 Pro, A18, or newer chips supporting Apple Intelligence is required. For the most resource-intensive operations, the secure Private Cloud Compute infrastructure is utilized, ensuring a balance between response speed and data privacy.

Seamless Ecosystem and Synchronization

An important aspect of the update is conversation continuity. Synchronization of interaction history and context is handled via the iCloud cloud service. This allows a user to start a query session on Apple Watch and then continue it on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac without losing the conversation structure. This approach turns the wearable device into a full-fledged node of a unified ecosystem, rather than an isolated gadget.

Compatibility and Roadmap

The implementation of new technologies inevitably requires an update to the hardware base. According to technical documentation, the updated Siri AI interface based on watchOS 27 is supported by a limited pool of devices:

  • Apple Watch Series 9;
  • Apple Watch Series 10;
  • Apple Watch Series 11 (2026 model);
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Ultra 3;
  • Apple Watch SE 3.

Earlier generations of smartwatches are excluded from support. The reason is non-compliance with the requirements for wireless interface throughput and the performance of built-in neural coprocessors (Neural Engine).

At the current stage of preliminary testing of watchOS 27 Beta 3, the Siri AI language pack functions exclusively in English. The public release of the stable version of the operating system and the official deployment of the core Apple Intelligence feature set for mass users are scheduled for the autumn of 2026.
