On July 3, a noticeable deterioration in air quality was observed in Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The city is shrouded in haze, and residents are complaining of an unpleasant smell of burning. Experts have already named the causes of what is happening and provided a forecast for the near future.
Double blow: fires and shelling
The situation with the smoke is due to a combination of two factors, reports Ivan Semylit, a meteorologist from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine. First, fires continue in the natural ecosystems of the region. Second, combustion products are entering the atmosphere following enemy shelling.
“Currently, we are observing a deterioration in air quality in Kyiv and the region as a whole,” the expert stated. According to him, the problem is large-scale and affects not only the capital but also adjacent territories.
Forecast: rain will help clean the air
Although the situation remains tense, meteorologists do not rule out an improvement soon. It is expected that an atmospheric front will move into the territory of the Kyiv region and the city of Kyiv. According to specialists' forecasts, moderate rain will begin in the second half of the day.
“Which will contribute to improving the situation by washing suspended substances out of the atmospheric air,” explained a representative of UkrGMC. Natural atmospheric cleansing should reduce the concentration of pollutant particles.
Radiation levels are within the norm
Special attention is paid to the radiation background in conditions of smoke. As of 9:00 AM on July 3, specialists recorded that the radiation level in the capital and the region remains within the norm.
“This is the situation we are currently observing. And this is currently all the information we have regarding pollution that we can provide,” Ivan Semylit concluded.
History repeats itself
Kyiv residents have already encountered similar problems at the end of June. At that time, mass complaints about smoke and the smell of burning were linked to large-scale forest fires in the Chernobyl zone. Currently, the situation is exacerbated by additional factors related to military actions.
