Ukrainian tennis player Daria Snigur concluded her performance at the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing, China, stopping just one step away from the quarterfinal stage. In the Round of 16 match, the Ukrainian athlete had to face the world No. 5, playing under the status of a 'neutral' athlete, Mirra Andreeva. The match attracted immense attention from the tennis community given the high stakes and the current form of both tennis players on the hard courts of the Chinese capital.
Match progression and key moments
From the very beginning of the meeting, the initiative passed to the match favorite. During the first set, Daria Snigur managed to win only two games, both on her own serve. Her opponent acted extremely focused and aggressively, which is why just 25 minutes after the start of the game she confidently closed the first set with a score of 6:2. In the second set, the battle intensified, although it started for the Ukrainian with three lost games in a row, two of which were on her own serve. In the fourth game, Snigur showed character, executed a break back, and reduced the gap to 2:3, but failed to build on the success: Andreeva responded with three consecutive games won and secured the final victory in the match.
Historical result and ranking prospects
Despite the defeat in the Round of 16, the very fact of reaching this stage at a WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing became the best achievement in Daria Snigur's professional career. Prior to this, her personal limit at tournaments of such a high level was the second round, which she successfully reached twice during the current year — at competitions in Madrid and Cincinnati. In addition, this match was only the second in the Ukrainian's career against an opponent from the top 5 of the WTA world rankings. Recall that in May she already met with an elite representative, losing to Iga Swiatek in Madrid. Nevertheless, following the tournament in Beijing, Snigur has real chances to rise to a career-high 41st place in the world rankings, provided that Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen does not reach the semifinals.
Tournament context and further plans of Ukrainian tennis players
The fight for prestigious trophies and high positions in the singles draw of the prestigious competitions in Beijing among Ukrainian women is now continued only by the country's top-ranked player Elina Svitolina. She will play her crucial Round of 16 match on Wednesday, October 7, where her opponent will be world No. 30 Ann Li. Earlier it was reported that Svitolina broke through to this stage after a dramatic encounter that became a real thriller for her fans. The coaching staff and experts note the high potential of Ukrainian tennis on the world stage, despite fierce competition in the WTA series tournaments.
