Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin publicly stated that there has been a critical increase in the number of attacks by Ukrainian combat drones on the Russian capital. According to him, over the past few months, the number of drones launched towards Moscow has increased manifold.
Two-thirds of attacks are directed at the capital
In a comment reported by Vesti and republished by RBK-Ukraine, the city head revealed shocking statistics. He claims that of all the drones that practically daily attack Russian territory, about 67% — that is, two-thirds — are directed specifically towards Moscow.
"The number of drones launched towards Moscow has increased manifold over the last few months," Sobyanin emphasized, noting a change in the enemy's tactics.
Strengthening the air defense system
In response to the escalation of the threat, the city authorities, together with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, have begun actively strengthening the city's defense system. The mayor reported that to intercept targets and ensure the safety of residents, data from surveillance cameras, radars, as well as reports from citizens, are being processed 24/7.
Despite acknowledging the scale of the threat, Sergei Sobyanin refused to reveal the exact figures of the damage caused. Details regarding the consequences of strikes on infrastructure and facilities in Moscow remain classified.
Context of escalation
The mayor's statement came against the backdrop of a series of high-profile incidents. For instance, on August 4, Ukrainian drones struck logistics centers of the Wildberries marketplace in the Moscow and Leningrad regions. Earlier, there were also reports of mass attacks on the capital and a fire at an oil depot in the Moscow region.
Due to the rising tension and fear of new strikes on Moscow, maps of bomb shelters for the population have begun to be actively published in Russia, preparing for a possible intensification of the aerial threat.
