The End of the Physical Media Era: Sony's Strategy Until 2028
The gaming industry is on the brink of a historic turning point. Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially confirmed a radical change in its business model: starting in January 2028, the company will completely cease releasing new games on physical discs. This decision means that all future releases for PlayStation consoles will be available exclusively in digital format.
This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the official PlayStation Blog. The corporation explained this move by a global shift in consumer interest towards cloud technologies and online distribution. Statistics confirm this trend: last year, sales of physical copies accounted for only 3% of the company's total revenue.
Consequences for the Market and Gamers
The new strategy will not affect discs released before January 2028; however, all subsequent new releases will be sold only as digital copies or as cards with download codes in retail networks. This decision will deliver a crushing blow to the secondary market. Gamers will no longer be able to resell, trade, or pass on new discs for PS5 to friends. Experts predict that this will completely destroy the business of many specialized retailers and game stores.
Furthermore, Sony's decision serves as an indirect hint at the architecture of the next console. The release of the PS5 Pro version without a built-in disc drive and new restrictions effectively confirm rumors that the future PlayStation 6 generation is being designed as a purely digital platform.
Industry Trends and Legal Risks
Although Sony is the first company to name specific dates for abandoning discs, similar steps are already being taken by Microsoft (Xbox) and Nintendo (via incomplete files on cartridges). Even Rockstar Games has announced an exclusively digital release for the anticipated GTA 6 in advance.
However, experts and the gaming community have met the news with a wave of criticism due to the legal nuances of digital purchases. When buying a game on the PlayStation Store, the user does not receive the game itself, but only a temporary license for access, which Sony can revoke at any time. The company has already demonstrated this in practice when, after the expiration of licensing deals, it simply removed purchased movies and Discovery series from buyers' private libraries.
Closing Stores for Legacy Consoles
Simultaneously with the news of the "death" of discs, Sony dealt a second blow to retro-gamers by announcing a schedule for closing PlayStation Store shops for legacy systems:
- August 2026: The first wave of store closures on PS3 will start in some Latin American countries.
- End of 2026: Restrictions on purchasing new content will extend to additional markets in Latin America and the Middle East.
- July 2027: Complete global closure of the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita worldwide, including the US and Europe.
After these dates arrive, users will not be able to purchase new digital games or add-ons on these devices. Sony assured that previously purchased content could still be downloaded from the cloud, but added a worrying caveat — "in the near foreseeable future." Most likely, this gives gamers no long-term guarantees for the preservation of digital collections.
