The gaming industry is witnessing a historic shift: the digital platform Steam, owned by Valve, is estimated by analysts to have surpassed the mark of 200 million monthly active users (MAU). This milestone was reached by mid-2026, placing the service in the position of an absolute leader, leaving its nearest competitor — Sony's PlayStation ecosystem — behind with a gap of more than 50%.
The Math of Dominance: Where the Numbers Come From
The specialized analytics agency GameDiscoverCo, led by expert Simon Carless, conducted a large-scale study to fill the information vacuum. Valve Corporation stopped regularly publishing exact data about its audience back in 2021, when it officially recorded 132 million users. However, independent calculations have allowed the picture to be restored.
The key to the solution was documents submitted by Valve to European Union regulators as part of the implementation of the Digital Services Act (DSA). According to the report for the second half of 2025, the average monthly audience of the service in the EU amounted to 31.1 million people. By comparing this legally declared array with open statistics on the geographical distribution of network traffic, analysts extrapolated global figures.
The result was impressive: by July 2026, the total Steam audience confidently crossed the threshold of 200 million people. For comparison, Sony's official financial report for March 2026 recorded 125 million PlayStation Network users.
Three Drivers of PC Segment Growth
The widening gap with the console giant reflects fundamental changes in player behavior and the industry's macroeconomics. Experts highlight three factors that ensured the explosive growth in Steam's popularity:
- Hardware diversification. The success of portable PCs, specifically the Steam Deck and similar solutions, has blurred the lines between console and PC gaming, lowering the barrier to entry for a new audience.
- Flexible pricing policy. Regular seasonal sales and regional pricing allowed the platform to capture emerging markets, ensuring high user conversion.
- Technical accessibility. Modern multiplayer projects are adapting to entry and mid-level laptop configurations, making games accessible to a wider range of users.
Data Validation and Methodological Nuances
To confirm the accuracy of the calculations, GameDiscoverCo applied an alternative mathematical model based on peak online dynamics. Official Valve data shows a steady growth in concurrent users of 3.4 million accounts annually. Projecting this rate onto the MAU metric gives a theoretical corridor of 213–221 million active users.
The difference between empirical data and the theoretical model is about 9%, which is within the limits of acceptable statistical error. At the same time, Steam's peak concurrent online in the spring of 2026 reached 41.2–42 million people.
Nevertheless, analysts urge caution in interpreting the figures. The DSA regulation does not provide an exhaustive definition of "activity." For example, clicking a link to the store's web storefront without launching the game client may be counted as an active action. Furthermore, international audit standards (including SEC requirements) classify MAU as a non-financial metric, the methodology for counting which remains an internal competency of each company. Despite these nuances, the obtained data is recognized by financial institutions as the most representative estimate of the PC distribution market capacity at the current moment.
