A debate is raging in the gaming industry regarding the future of technology, and new data sheds light on the audience's actual attitude toward artificial intelligence. The research platform GameDiscoverCo has published the results of a large-scale survey among Steam users, showing that: contrary to the noise on social media, gamers are far more pragmatic than commonly believed.

The cumulative share of users who are loyal or neutral toward the implementation of generative AI in game development has exceeded 68%. This is a fundamental shift in perception that calls into question the dominant narrative of total rejection of the technology.

Numbers vs. Myths: Who is Actually Against It?

The representative survey involved 3,800 active Steam accounts. The questions concerned the admissibility of using neural networks to create graphics, code, dialogue, and music. The results revealed a clear segmentation of opinions, which differs significantly from the picture painted in comments on Reddit or X.

The aggregate indicator of direct support for the technologies was 43%. If we break down this figure into its components, the picture looks as follows:

  • Absolute Approval (23.4%): This group is not bothered by the use of AI. For them, there are no barriers to buying games created with the help of neural networks.
  • Moderate Approval (19.6%): Gamers are ready to accept the technologies, but on the condition of maintaining high product quality.
  • Neutrality (25.6%): The so-called "passive majority." These users evaluate the final product without being interested in the toolkit used to create it.

At the same time, the group of radical opponents who declare a categorical boycott of projects marked "AI-generated" makes up only 8.1%. Despite the high media activity of this cluster, in reality, they are in a clear minority.

Valve's Policy: New Rules of the Game

The results of the study coincide with the period of tightening rules on the Steam platform. At the beginning of the year, the corporation Valve introduced mandatory disclosure (AI Disclosure) for all developers. Now, publishers are obliged to clearly distinguish between two types of AI integration, creating a new structure of responsibility.

The first type is Pre-generation. This is the creation of content (art, code, voiceover) at the development stage. Valve allows the publication of such games on the condition that the source datasets do not infringe on the copyright of third parties.

The second type is Real-time Generation. This is the creation of content directly during the gameplay. For such projects, Steam provides a mandatory in-game complaint system, allowing users to promptly report the generation of illegal or offensive content.

Economics and Ethics: The Battle for Jobs

Behind the dry statistics lies a serious social conflict. Representatives of writers' and artists' unions (such as GWU) point to the remaining risks. The automation of routine processes puts the jobs of junior-level specialists at risk, who traditionally performed tasks related to the generation of basic assets.

However, the view of independent studios (Indie developers) is diametrically opposite. For them, AI becomes a critically important factor for survival. Technologies allow reducing capital expenditures and competing with industry giants in the AAA segment, whose budgets are counted in hundreds of millions of dollars.

Punishment for violating rules on Steam has now become stricter. Improper disclosure of the use of generative algorithms or the detection of the use of copyrighted materials without a license entails the forced removal of the software product from the store without a refund of the registration fee. This puts developers in a position of strict compliance with the rules to avoid losing access to the audience.
