For millennia, humanity has been convinced that reason is a privilege of flesh. But new research challenges this idea. Scientists from the University of California and the University of Antwerp claim that consciousness can arise even in beings with stone bodies — if the right conditions align.

Terracentrism: The Trap of Human Thinking

The main term introduced by researchers is terracentrism. This is the unwarranted assumption that only carbon-based biology — blood, muscles, neurons — is capable of producing consciousness. According to philosophers, such a limitation in thinking prevents us from seeing the reality of the cosmos as it truly is.

"We cannot judge the Universe through the prism of terrestrial anatomy," the authors emphasize. If on Earth intelligence evolved in vertebrates, cephalopods, and some insects, then on a galactic scale, the number of possible worlds with life is counted in quintillions. With such a volume of the "cosmic lottery," nature will inevitably create forms of intelligence that human imagination is not even capable of modeling.

Substrate Flexibility: Consciousness Is Not Tied to Material

The basis of the scientists' argumentation lies in the philosophical concept of substrate flexibility. It describes a situation where the same function can be implemented by different physical materials. Just as a cup — whether ceramic, glass, or metal — always performs its role, so too can consciousness exist in different "containers."

Complex information connections, memory, emotions, and sensory systems can evolve not only in biological cells but also in inorganic structures — for example, in crystal lattices or silicon chips. The belief that only beings with our anatomy can be thinking beings violates the Copernican astronomical principle — the idea that Earth and humanity do not occupy a privileged position in the Universe.

Disagreements Around AI: Who Is Right — Skeptic or Optimist?

The theoretical conclusions of philosophers directly concern modern discussions about artificial intelligence. If AI is capable of acquiring self-awareness, it will create an entity radically different from anything humanity is used to.

However, the views of the authors of the study have diverged:

  • Jeremy Pober expresses skepticism: until there is ironclad evidence, modern silicon chips cannot generate true consciousness.
  • Eric Schwitzgebel takes the opposite position: denying intelligence in non-biological substrates is a manifestation of "terrestrial selfishness." He calls for openness to the idea that the Universe may hide minds that significantly outpace our understanding.

"Humanity will have to learn to accept consciousness in any form — from a stone alien to a digital algorithm," Schwitzgebel concludes.

What Does This Mean for Us?

The study does not prove the existence of stone aliens or conscious AI — it raises the question: are we ready to reconsider our views on intelligence? If consciousness is indeed substrate-flexible, then the search for life in the Universe must go beyond biology. And the development of AI will require not only technical but also philosophical solutions from us: how to treat entities that we created but which may turn out to be "other" by their very nature?
