On the night of June 15, Kyiv witnessed one of the most resonant incidents in recent months. Russian forces struck the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra — one of Ukraine's main spiritual and cultural centers. A drone hit the Dormition Cathedral, the main church of the complex, causing a fire and serious damage.
Moment of Impact: Footage from the Scene
The National Reserve "Kyiv Pechersk Lavra" released the first footage of the attack. The video shows a Russian drone hitting the roof of the Dormition Cathedral. Immediately after the impact, the building was engulfed in flames. Fire brigades arrived promptly and managed to localize the fire, but the damage was already done.
The footage also reveals the aftermath of the attack: a damaged roof, fire traces on the facade, and destruction inside the church. The iconostasis, frescoes, and murals were particularly affected — unique elements of historical heritage that cannot be fully restored.
Evacuation of Holy Relics and Closure of the Complex
Immediately after the strike, reserve staff began the urgent evacuation of ancient icons, antimins, and other liturgical items that could have been destroyed by fire or smoke. To ensure visitor safety, the complex was temporarily closed.
"It is painful to see a damaged holy site that has survived more than one attempt to erase it from Ukrainian history. But we have already revived what the enemy tried to destroy more than once. We will restore it now as well," the Lavra stated.
Attack as Part of Night Terror
The strike on the Lavra was part of a large-scale Russian night attack on Kyiv. That same night, about 60 missiles and attack drones were launched. The targets included both military objects and civilian infrastructure, including cultural and religious centers.
Experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) note that the strike on the Dormition Cathedral had not only military but also symbolic significance. In their opinion, Vladimir Putin aimed to strike at Ukrainian identity by destroying monuments that have shaped national self-awareness for centuries.
History of Resistance and Restoration
The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra has been a target of enemy attacks more than once. At different periods in its history, it has experienced fires, destruction, and attempts at annihilation. However, each time the holy site was reborn — thanks to the efforts of monks, restorers, and the entire Ukrainian people.
"A church engulfed in flames is yet another crime by Russian occupiers seeking to destroy our memory, culture, and identity," the reserve emphasized.
What's Next?
Currently, work is underway to assess the damage and plan restoration activities. The restoration process is expected to take a significant amount of time and will require the involvement of international experts and specialists.
Despite the tragedy, the Ukrainian side remains confident that the Lavra will once again become a symbol of the country's spiritual and cultural revival.
