On the night of June 7, an incident occurred within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone that could have global consequences. A Russian attack drone struck the building of the Centralized Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel (CSFSNF), located near the village of Buryakivka in the Kyiv region, approximately 15 kilometers from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

Details of the attack and consequences

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, an enemy drone, identified as a Shahed, hit the container reception building. As a result of the strike, partial destruction of the structure occurred, and a fire covering an area of about 40 square meters broke out. Ukrainian rescuers quickly localized the fire and completely extinguished it. Remains of the downed drone were found at the scene.

Fortunately, no injuries among the personnel were recorded. Specialists continue to monitor the radiation situation. As of the time of publication, radiation levels at the facility remain within normal limits.

Reaction of the President of Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his Telegram channel, called Russia's actions a "cowardly strike on an object of extremely critical infrastructure." The President emphasized that the attack was carried out consciously and intentionally.

"There is definitely an excess of even the long-established sky-high Russian audacity," Zelenskyy stated. He also added that Ukrainian services are already working to ensure that every international partner knows about the crimes of the aggressor state.

The head of state called for real new steps towards peace so that Russia feels that its "terrorist war" is hitting Russia itself.

Scale of aggression

The night attack on the nuclear facility was part of a massive wave of strikes. During this night, Russia struck civilian objects in 13 regions of Ukraine. Over the past week, the aggressor has launched 88 missiles, more than 3,250 attack drones, and about 1,800 aviation bombs (KABs) against Ukraine.

The Centralized Storage Facility is intended for the long-term and safe storage of spent nuclear fuel from Ukrainian nuclear power plants. An attack on such a facility threatens not only Ukraine but also the environmental safety of the entire region.
