Strike on Smila: Shrapnel Drone Destroys Nine-Story Building, Casualties Reported

On the night of August 14, 2026, a powerful explosion rocked the city of Smila in the Cherkasy region. An enemy unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) packed with shrapnel struck a residential nine-story building. The incident occurred as part of a large-scale air attack launched by Russia against Ukraine that night.

Scale of Destruction and Rescue Operations

According to the State Emergency Service (SES), the drone impact on the building's facade caused a fire. The flames engulfed part of the stairwell, causing significant structural damage. Photos from the scene show burnt-out balconies, destroyed window openings, and a damaged facade. Fire crews arrived promptly and managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to neighboring apartments.

Rescuers evacuated 10 residents who were in the immediate danger zone. Psychologists were also present at the scene, providing support to 23 people who experienced stress from the attack and explosion. Despite the destruction, the building did not collapse; however, one of the stairwells sustained serious damage requiring assessment by engineers.

Casualties and Injuries

Five people were injured as a result of the attack. Ambulance crews provided medical assistance to all injured parties on-site. Fortunately, the apartment at the epicenter of the explosion was unoccupied at the time of the strike, which likely prevented more tragic consequences. All five injured individuals refused hospitalization despite medical recommendations.

The incident in Smila was part of a large-scale night attack that took place on the night of August 14. According to air defense data, Russia launched 112 drones against Ukraine from five different directions. Air defense forces shot down or neutralized 90 of the enemy UAVs. Impacts were recorded at 11 locations across the country. This indicates an attempt by the adversary to overload the air defense system and strike civilian targets.

An enemy strike on a residential building claimed the lives of a woman and her 9-year-old son. Four others were injured, two of whom were hospitalized with severe burns. Government Response

Ihor Taburets, Head of the Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, confirmed the attack and stated that the city was struck on the night of August 14. He noted that the residents of the affected apartment were absent at the time of the explosion, which was a decisive factor in the absence of fatalities. Regional authorities continue to assess the damage and assist the victims.
