Sumy Oblast, one of the most devastated territories in northern Ukraine, has become the focus of the Ministry of Defense and the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This week, extensive work was carried out in the region to assess the situation and develop new defense strategies. The initiative comes from Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who personally visited the region to coordinate actions.
Unprecedented pressure and new enemy tactics
According to Fedorov, Sumy Oblast has been under unprecedented fire pressure since the beginning of the year. The attack statistics are alarming: Russia has launched more than 12,000 strikes on the territory of the region. The aggressor's arsenal includes various types of weapons, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, artillery, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The consequences of these attacks are catastrophic. 122 civilians have been killed, and more than 1,200 people have been injured — many of them children. More than 2,600 residential buildings, schools, hospitals, and energy and civilian infrastructure facilities have been destroyed or damaged.
Particular concern is caused by the change in the enemy's tactics. Since June, the security situation in the region has deteriorated significantly. Russia has scaled up the use of "Molniya" type UAVs, fiber-optic FPV drones, strike UAVs, and guided aerial bombs (KABs). According to the minister, the goal of the aggression is to terrorize the population and make life in border regions unbearable.
Coordination meeting and new decisions
The main goal of the visit by military personnel and representatives of the Ministry of Defense was to develop solutions to strengthen air defense under conditions of constant Russian terror. A coordination meeting was held with the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, military personnel, and representatives of the services responsible for protecting the sky over the region.
As a result of the meeting, Fedorov announced a set of measures adopted to strengthen the region's air defense. Some of these decisions, for security reasons, are not disclosed, but they are aimed at significantly increasing the level of protection for Sumy Oblast.
The Defense Minister also promised to adopt additional decisions in the near future to coordinate the work of all government bodies to strengthen the protection of frontline regions from Russian shelling.
Changes in the warning system
An important step was the decision to modernize the system for warning the population. In Sumy, authorities will change notifications about Russian attacks. In particular, an additional warning will be introduced in the event of an air bomb threat, which should give people more time to save themselves.
The relevance of these measures is confirmed by recent events. On the evening of July 3, occupiers attacked Sumy with a large number of drones and air bombs. As a result of the tragedy, three people were killed and 27 were injured. It is precisely such incidents that dictate the need for an urgent review of approaches to protecting the civilian population and infrastructure.
