Controversial Decision by the International Criminal Court

Within the walls of the International Criminal Court (ICC), an event occurred capable of altering the course of international investigations. On June 8, during a session, an unprecedented decision was made: Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan was suspended from office. This decision resulted from disciplinary proceedings initiated due to serious allegations against the high-ranking lawyer.

A key role in the decision was played by a committee of 21 member states of the court. The majority voted that Khan's actions, linked to allegations of sexual harassment, violate ethical norms and require an immediate response. The case has been referred to a special session of member states to determine the prosecutor's further fate.

Allegations and Defense

Information about possible harassment by Karim Khan first appeared in the autumn of 2024. According to Western media, the accusations were made by his assistant—a lawyer from Malaysia. The prosecutor himself categorically rejects all claims, calling them part of an Israeli special operation aimed at his discreditation.

Khan's lawyers disagree with the suspension decision, considering it illegal. The defense states that the allegations are not supported by sufficient evidence. Since May 2025, Khan has been on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Consequences for International Justice

Karim Asad Ahmad Khan, a 56-year-old British lawyer specializing in international criminal law and human rights, has held the post of ICC Chief Prosecutor since February 2021. It was he who secured the arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, making him one of the most prominent figures in modern international law.

In Russia, a criminal case has already been opened against Khan for "unlawful prosecution of Russian citizens." A Moscow court sentenced him in absentia to 15 years in prison. Additionally, the US imposed sanctions on Khan after the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Confidentiality of the Process

The decision of the ICC Bureau and related documentation remain confidential. The court calls for respect for the rights of all interested parties and the preservation of the integrity of the current process. This underscores the importance of adhering to procedures and protecting the reputation of investigation participants.

The suspension of Karim Khan from office has become a turning point in the history of the ICC. It not only affects current investigations but also calls into question trust in international justice as a whole. The court's next steps will be closely monitored by the international community.
