Svitolina leaves Cincinnati due to injury
Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina voluntarily withdrew from the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, USA. The athlete, who was scheduled to meet Chinese player Wang Xiyu in the round of 16, decided to withdraw from the competition due to an injury sustained earlier at the tournament in Toronto. This was reported by Sport RBC.UA citing the tournament's official Instagram account.
In a statement published by the organizers, Svitolina explained that the injury flared up during her second-round match against Tereza Martincova. It was then that she was forced to take a medical timeout to consult with a doctor. "Unfortunately, I need better recovery because the injury I sustained in Toronto flared up during the second-round match. I was unable to recover properly for my next match," the Ukrainian noted.
Last chance for victory this season
For Svitolina, this tournament was one of the last chances to strengthen her ranking positions before the final stages of the season. She started the year with a strong performance at the Australian Open, where she reached the semi-finals, losing only to Aryna Sabalenka. In February at the tournament in Dubai, she also reached the final, losing to Jessica Pegula. However, the injury sustained in Toronto became a serious obstacle to continuing a successful season.
Contradictory data
Although official sources confirm that Svitolina withdrew due to injury, some experts suggest that the decision may have been dictated not only by medical reasons. In particular, in an interview for Sports.kz, it is mentioned that the WTA approached Svitolina with a proposal to consider replacing the opponent or postponing the match. However, the tennis player herself insists that the decision was made solely in the interests of her health and long-term recovery.
Historical data and current context
The defending champion of the tournament in Cincinnati is Iga Swiatek, who last year defeated Jasmine Paolini in the final. In the Open Era, this tournament has been won most often by Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka. Svitolina, who has not previously won this tournament, could have become the first Ukrainian to win here if not for the injury.
Svitolina's future plans
Despite the premature end of her participation in Cincinnati, Svitolina retains hope of returning to full form by the US Open. She also received a unique chance to show herself in an unusual format at this tournament alongside Gael Monfils. For now, her team is working on recovery so that she can return to the court in optimal condition.
