Ukraine's top-ranked tennis player Elina Svitolina has learned her group composition for the WTA Finals 2026 season-ending tournament. According to the draw results reported by Sport RBC.UA citing WTA data, the Ukrainian was placed in the second quartet, where she will face two top-3 players in the world and a representative of the Czech Republic. The competition will take place from November 8 to 15 in Indian Wells, USA, marking Svitolina's first appearance at the tournament in a long break.
Group B Lineup: Sabalenka, Andreeva and Muchova
The second group of the 2026 Finals turned out to be one of the toughest in the draw. Elina Svitolina's opponents include world number two Aryna Sabalenka, world number three Mirra Andreeva, competing under a 'neutral' athlete status, as well as Czech tennis player Karolina Muchova. Thus, already at the group stage, the Ukrainian will face three top-tier matches, where every single point could decide the outcome.
Group A: Rybakina, Gauff, Pegula and Noskova
The other quartet features Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, and Czech Republic's Linda Noskova. Both groups are structured to balance rankings and competitive levels, ensuring a fierce battle for the two semifinal spots in each quartet.
Format and Schedule
The WTA Finals 2026 will run from November 8 to 15 in Indian Wells, USA. During the group stage, each of the eight participants will play three matches against opponents in her respective quartet. The top two tennis players from each group will advance to the semifinals, followed by knockout matches to determine the season champion. The round-robin plus playoffs format makes every group stage match crucial, as even a single defeat can heavily complicate the path to the semifinals.
Return to the Elite: First Appearance Since 2019
For Elina Svitolina, participating in the WTA Finals 2026 will be her first since 2019. The Ukrainian already holds a victory at this prestigious tournament, having won the season finale in 2018. This makes her current qualification into the final eight a logical continuation of her career and a chance to fight for her second title. According to the final WTA rankings ahead of the Finals, Svitolina maintained her spot in the top 10, securing her main draw placement.
Marta Kostyuk — First Alternate
Another Ukrainian representative, Marta Kostyuk, became the tournament's first alternate. She will enter the main draw if at least one of the eight participants withdraws from the competition. Kostyuk also maintained her position in the top 10 of the final WTA rankings ahead of the Finals, highlighting the strong presence of Ukrainian tennis in the season's elite eight.
