The Ukrainian Armed Forces have received modern Giraffe radar systems manufactured in Sweden. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing the Ministry of Defense press service. The new equipment is designed to close critical gaps in the air defense system, ensuring reliable detection of drones, aircraft, and cruise missiles.
Saab Technologies Against Air Threats
The Giraffe radar system is a development by the Swedish corporation Saab, which combines radar surveillance capabilities with an integrated command, control, and communication system. The main task of the complex is to detect threats as quickly as possible and coordinate response actions.
The capabilities of Swedish radars are impressive. Depending on the modification, the stations monitor airspace at distances of up to 100 km and at altitudes of up to 20 km. The spectrum of detectable objects is extremely wide: from supersonic fighters and helicopters to cruise missiles and slow-flying low-altitude UAVs.
Speed and Mobility as Key Advantages
One of the main characteristics of the Giraffe is the high frequency of data updates. The time to re-acquire a target is just one second, allowing operators to see the current picture of the air situation in real-time.
The system is characterized by high mobility and speed of deployment. Depending on the modification, the station can be installed on trucks, tracked vehicles, pickups, or placed in a stationary position. This makes it possible to build a flexible network of radar reconnaissance adapted to specific tactical tasks.
The system deployment time is less than 10 minutes, and packing takes less than 5 minutes. Such operational efficiency allows for quickly changing positions, minimizing the risk of the radar being disabled by the enemy.
Multifunctionality and New Horizons for Air Defense
Giraffe is capable of not only monitoring the sky but also detecting artillery and mortar fire, as well as identifying targets for air defense. Additionally, the system can be equipped with functions for detecting targets on the sea surface and specialized modules for counter-drone operations.
The delivery of Swedish radars is taking place against the backdrop of active modernization of the Ukrainian defense system. Previously, there were reports about the creation of a unique DART missile launched from stratospheric balloons. This development, fully resistant to electronic warfare means, rises to an altitude of 12 to 18 kilometers, where special servos ensure activation accuracy and flight trajectory stability.
