Switzerland is facing an unprecedented situation: Alpine glaciers are melting at a record pace, nearly three months ahead of the usual schedule. Scientists are recording one of the most severe seasons in the entire history of observations, as the process of ice disappearance is gaining alarming momentum.
'Loss Day' and record melting
Matthias Huss, head of the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Service (GLAMOS), reported that by the beginning of the week, the winter snow cover on the glaciers will have melted completely. In the scientific community, this moment is called the 'glacier loss day.' It is during this period that glaciers lose the snow accumulated over the winter, and further melting begins to affect the multi-year ice that has been forming for decades.
Since 2000, when systematic observations began, such an early 'loss day' has been recorded only once — in 2022. The current season is becoming the second earliest in history. According to Huss, specialists are observing 'colossal ablation' — high rates of ice and snow melting across the entire Alpine region.
The scale of the losses is impressive: in just the last ten days, almost a meter of ice has melted on the Rhône Glacier. The main problem lies not in isolated hot days, but in the prolonged persistence of high temperatures. The longer the heat lasts, the faster the glaciers shrink.
Sahara dust and snow deficit
The situation is exacerbated by two factors. First, insufficient snow fell during the winter, depriving the glaciers of natural protection. Second, dust from the Sahara desert settled on the ice surface in the spring. The dark sediment reduces the reflectivity of the glaciers, causing them to absorb more solar heat and melt even faster.
Preliminary estimates indicate significant ice losses this year. Scientists will summarize the final results in the autumn, but the warning signs are already obvious.
Threat to Europe's water resources
The reduction of glacial reserves puts the continent's water supply at risk. Alpine glaciers are a critically important source of water for two of Europe's largest rivers — the Rhine and the Rhône. Their melting directly affects the water regime of these arteries.
GLAMOS statistics show a dramatic trend: from 2000 to 2024, the volume of Swiss glaciers decreased by 38%. Over the last half-century, the country has lost about 1,200 glaciers. Currently, there are approximately 1,300 left. Matthias Huss warned that if warming continues at the same rate, by the end of the century, only small patches of ice will remain from most Swiss glaciers.
Heat in Europe: repeating the 2003 scenario
The problem of melting glaciers is inextricably linked to the anomalous heat that swept across Europe at the end of June. Temperature records led to infrastructure disruptions and human casualties. Meteorologists are comparing the current heatwave with the catastrophic heat of 2003, which became one of the deadliest in the continent's history.
In particular, a new temperature record of 41.5 degrees was recorded in Germany. Forecasters warn that in the coming days, thermometer readings may rise even higher, which will only accelerate the destruction of the Alpine glacial systems.
