Ukrainian tennis players Oleksandra Oleinikova and Dayana Yastremska concluded their performances at the WTA 250 tournament in Hong Kong following the opening round. Both representatives of Ukraine failed to win a single set and lost to their opponents in an hour and a half. For Yastremska, who won this tournament in 2018, the defeat was particularly painful: the former champion could not even get past the first round.

Yastremska Loses to Sonmez in 1 Hour 27 Minutes

In the opening match of the day, Dayana Yastremska met Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sonmez. The match was quite even until the middle of the first set: at 4:4, the Turkish athlete made a decisive break and brought the set to 6:4. In the second set, Sonmez immediately took a 2:0 lead and left the Ukrainian no chance for a comeback, conceding only two games (6:2). The total duration of the clash was 1 hour and 27 minutes. For Yastremska, this was her third career appearance in Hong Kong and her second exit in the very first round. Dayana's main achievement at this tournament remains her 2018 championship title won in the final against China's Wang Qiang.

Oleinikova Fails to Convert Break Point and Loses Tiebreak

Oleksandra Oleinikova had a real chance to take the first set against fifth-seeded Australian Talia Gibson after a break in the eighth game. However, the Ukrainian lost three games in a row and dropped the set in a tiebreak (5:7). The second part of the match was completely controlled by Gibson: after winning the opening game, Oleinikova lost all subsequent ones (1:6). The match lasted exactly an hour and a half. For Oleinikova, this tournament was her debut in Hong Kong.

Oleinikova's Unsuccessful Streak Continues

The defeat to Gibson extended Oleksandra's poor run to four consecutive losses. Furthermore, Oleinikova has failed to advance beyond the second round in nine consecutive WTA tournaments. The last time she managed to reach the third round was at the Hamburg tournament in July. Thus, ahead of the season's WTA Finals, the Ukrainian tennis player cannot find stable form at the top-tier level.

Context: Ukrainian Tennis Ahead of the WTA Finals

The elimination of both athletes in the first round in Hong Kong became another episode of a difficult period for Ukrainian women's tennis. Earlier it was reported where Elina Svitolina and her main competitors finished in the seasonal WTA rankings ahead of the Finals. The Hong Kong WTA 250 tournament traditionally attracts attention as one of the final starting stages before the end of the season, but for the Ukrainian representatives in 2026 it turned out unsuccessfully.
