Ukrainian technical science demonstrates high resilience and competitiveness on the international stage. According to the updated Scopus 2026 ranking, two technical universities have entered the top 10 best universities in the country. This result confirms that engineering schools remain the drivers of the state's scientific activity.

Monitoring data published by the resource «Osvita.ua», citing analytics from RBK-Ukraine, is based on indicators from the global scientometric database SciVerse Scopus. Experts evaluate the effectiveness of universities using the Hirsch index (h-index). This parameter is considered the most objective, as it takes into account not only the number of published works but also their actual demand in the global scientific community, measured by the number of citations.

Key players: KPI and Lviv Polytechnic

In the overall top ten of the best Ukrainian universities, technical universities have taken confident positions. The National Technical University of Ukraine «Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute» (KPI) is ranked 5th. Lviv Polytechnic secured the 8th place.

The success of these institutions is explained by the presence of powerful scientific schools and developed infrastructure. Both universities actively participate in international projects, which directly affects the frequency of citations of their research by foreign colleagues. Integration into the global research space has allowed them to surpass many classical universities in key metrics.

Specialization as an advantage

The ranking also showed high efficiency for universities with narrow specialization. Universities such as the Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics (KNURE) and Dnipro Polytechnic demonstrate excellent results in their niches. Despite the fact that their total volume of publications may be smaller than that of large classical universities, articles in the fields of IT, energy, and materials science consistently attract the attention of the global scientific community.

Positive dynamics are also observed among regional polytechnic universities. A bright example is the growth of indicators at the Sumy State University. The success of this university confirms the thesis that a focus on publications in authoritative journals is the main factor for growth in the ranking.

Challenges for technical science

Despite successes in scientometrics, experts note a number of systemic problems facing technical universities. The main obstacle to further growth of the citation index remains the need to modernize the material and technical base.

A critically important factor is the integration of science with business. The implementation of developments in the real sector of the economy, especially in the defense and aerospace industries, can significantly increase the practical value of research and, consequently, their popularity in the global community. The monitoring covered more than 200 Ukrainian universities with an official identifier in the Scopus database, which allows the presented picture to be considered the most complete and objective.
