One of Ukraine's most titled karate athletes, Anzhelika Terlyuga, shared the real financial side of professional sports in an exclusive interview. The champion detailed what athletes' earnings depend on and how she managed to secure her financial independence through her career.

Sources of Income for Elite Athletes

According to Anzhelika Terlyuga, material well-being in professional sports directly depends on personal results, media activity, and the overall popularity of the discipline. The athlete emphasized that a top-tier athlete who regularly wins medals at official tournaments has the opportunity to diversify their income.

Among the key sources of earnings, she highlighted prize money from international competitions, state awards and scholarships, as well as contracts with sponsors. In addition, invitations to specialized masterclasses and seminars, as well as monetizing her personal brand on social media, play an important role.

Early Career Struggles and the Olympic Factor

However, the path to financial stability was long. The athlete confessed that at the dawn of her adult career, she earned almost nothing from karate, and rare cash bonuses barely covered basic travel and training expenses.

The turning point came when Terlyuga reached the peak of her athletic form and established herself as a global star. A crucial factor was that her greatest achievements coincided with the Olympic cycle, which attracted maximum attention from media and commercial partners.

Purchases and Looking to the Future

Thanks to the funds earned through years of hard work, Anzhelika managed to solve major life issues, including purchasing her own apartment and a car. Nevertheless, the karateka insists that she never viewed sports purely as a business project or a source of enrichment.

Upon completing professional performances, a high-level athlete always has the opportunity to monetize their unique experience by moving into coaching. This allows them to maintain their status in the sports community and secure a stable source of income in the future.
