On November 5, around 11:00, an incident involving weapons took place at a retail establishment on Danylo Halytskyi Boulevard in Ternopil. According to the National Police, an armed man entered the store and threatened the people inside, followed by sounds of gunfire from the premises. A special police operation was launched in the city, with law enforcement and specialized services arriving promptly at the scene. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a statement from the department.

Timeline: From threats to an explosion

Investigators established that some time before the attack, the suspect had already visited the shop, behaved aggressively, and had a conflict with the staff. He then left the premises but later returned armed. Once inside, he began threatening people, and shots were fired, which led to the initiation of a special operation and the surrounding of the building.

Law enforcement actions

According to the police, during negotiations, officers managed to distract the attacker. Taking advantage of this, the hostages ran out of the building through the service exit. At that moment, the suspect detonated an object resembling a grenade and began firing chaotically. Thanks to the coordinated actions of KORD special forces, the armed perpetrator was arrested. Negotiators and armed special unit fighters worked at the scene, as confirmed by footage from the incident.

Identity of the shooter

The detainee was identified as a 53-year-old resident of Ternopil who was in a state of alcoholic intoxication. Law enforcement seized a hunting knife and an object resembling a pistol from him. As of the time of the statement's publication, the question of notifying him of charges and choosing a preventive measure is being addressed.

Legal status and investigation

The suspect has been detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Information has been entered into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Part 2 of Article 146 (unlawful imprisonment of a person) and Part 1 of Article 345 (threat or violence against a law enforcement officer) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The investigation is ongoing.
