Human traffic as a statistical error

During a briefing following Cloudflare's financial report, held in 2026, Thomas Zierdt voiced a shocking figure: the volume of traffic generated by non-human sources could exceed human traffic by a thousand times. This does not mean that people will stop using the internet for communication, shopping, or paying for services. The problem lies in the exponential explosion of activity from machines. Traditional bots, which previously only scanned pages, are being replaced by complex AI agents capable of autonomously making decisions, performing actions, and generating content. As a result, every request from a human against the backdrop of this "digital noise" becomes a magnitude comparable to a statistical error.

Infrastructure transformation and threats

The massive growth of machine traffic creates a colossal load on servers and the rest of the internet infrastructure. If the load was previously distributed relatively evenly, now it is concentrated on processing requests from automated applications. This puts the stability of services oriented towards people at risk. Zierdt admitted that in the past, his forecasts sometimes did not come true, however, current trends point to the irreversibility of the process. If no measures are taken, the internet will change beyond recognition, becoming an environment where the human factor will play a secondary role.

To prevent collapse and maintain the usefulness of the internet for people, the industry is forced to seek new paths. Cloudflare offers a comprehensive approach, including intelligent traffic management, the implementation of optimized protocols, and the use of hardware acceleration. A key direction is the development of edge computing, which will allow data to be processed closer to the source, reducing the load on central nodes. In addition, experts note that existing AI accelerator and graphics processor capacities are currently underutilized, opening up opportunities for their more effective use in the fight against machine noise.

On the one hand, proponents of the pessimistic scenario point out that human-generated traffic is already inferior to machine traffic, and the gap will only grow.
