On July 14, France traditionally celebrates Bastille Day with a grand military parade on the Champs-Élysées. However, this year the event acquires a fundamentally new political subtext. Paris has decided to turn the ceremonial march into a powerful signal of support for Ukraine and a demonstration of the West's readiness to counter Russian aggression.
Record scale and enhanced equipment
It is expected that the current parade will significantly exceed last year's figures in terms of scale. About 10,000 servicemen will take part in the march. Moreover, the French military command has decided to increase the amount of heavy ground equipment and combat aviation involved by approximately 30%. This decision was not made by chance: the French General Staff formulated the parade concept taking into account the critical strategic situation in Europe.
Paris aims to visually demonstrate the real results of the large-scale rearmament of its own army against the backdrop of Russia's war against Ukraine. Special attention will be paid to units that are already in areas of heightened tension — French military units deployed on NATO's eastern flank, in particular in Estonia, Poland, and Romania, will take part in the parade.
Air brotherhood: fighters for Ukraine
The main and most spectacular element of the air part of the parade will be a unique demonstration of Ukrainian-French air brotherhood. Two Mirage 2000 fighters will be piloted by pilots from both countries — a Ukrainian and a French aviator. One of the combat aircraft will be symbolically repainted in the national colors of Ukraine, which will become a bright visual accent of the entire event.
Political context: Macron's last parade
This event acquires special significance for French politics, as it will be the last military parade during the term of the current President Emmanuel Macron. The event is intended to show the strength and unity of the French army in the face of modern challenges.
The parade will take place against the backdrop of important diplomatic events. It was previously reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would attend the G7 summit in France, which will take place in mid-June. At the meeting, he intends to address a number of key issues, including Ukraine's security, which only underscores the relevance of the chosen theme for the July military show.
