Ukraine has firmly responded to Moscow's attempts to rely on non-existent agreements. The country's Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiga, stated that the Kremlin needs to stop living in illusions and move to real negotiations. According to him, any peace plans prepared without Kyiv's participation are doomed to failure.
The Foreign Minister made this point in his post on the social network X, which was noted by RBC-Ukraine. Sybiga pointed out the strange obsession of Russian authorities with the so-called "spirit of Anchorage".
The Myth of the "Spirit of Anchorage"
According to the Ukrainian diplomat, this term is often mentioned in Russia in an attempt to convince of its significance, although no one can explain exactly what it implies. Sybiga stated the obvious fact: even if this "spirit" ever existed, it is certainly dead now.
The term arose after the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Anchorage in August 2025. The Kremlin began to interpret this event as achieving some mutual understanding with Washington regarding the end of the war in Ukraine and future security architecture.
However, reality turned out to be more complex. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Trump and Putin allegedly discussed a large-scale division of Ukrainian territories, but the implementation of this scenario was prevented by the decisive intervention of European allies. At the same time, Washington repeatedly denied the existence of any agreements. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the parties only discussed proposals, but no agreements on Ukraine were signed.
The End of Hopes for External Mediation
Despite the denials, Russian authorities continued to appeal to the "spirit of Anchorage". However, recently the Kremlin admitted that it no longer expects the implementation of these agreements and will focus on achieving its own goals. Even Donald Trump himself during the recent G7 summit told European leaders that he might abandon the so-called "Anchorage agreements", which, according to Axios, implied Russian control over Donbas.
In this situation, Andriy Sybiga called on Moscow to stop believing in spirits and respond to Ukraine's serious proposals to sit at the negotiating table. He emphasized that dictator Vladimir Putin will not achieve his goals on the battlefield.
"The longer Putin refuses to recognize reality — namely, that he will never achieve any goals on the battlefield — the worse it will get for Russia," concluded the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
