The web browser market is undergoing a period of radical restructuring. According to fresh data from the analytics resource Statcounter, which monitors user activity and web traffic in real-time, Google Chrome in 2026 is not just maintaining its leadership but significantly widening the gap with competitors. The search giant's dominance has become so massive that major market players, including Microsoft Edge and Opera, are forced to retreat.
Global Landscape: Google Monopoly
In the ranking of the most popular PC browsers worldwide, Chrome took the first place with a significant advantage. The second place is held by Microsoft's Edge, while Apple's Safari closes the top three. They are followed by Firefox and Opera. Experts note that these five products currently control 97% of the global market, leaving only a tiny share for other players.
However, the situation in different regions has its own peculiarities. In Ukraine, for example, the picture looks different: although Google Chrome remains unrivaled here, Opera has firmly established itself in second place. Microsoft Edge did not make it into the top three in the Ukrainian segment, dropping to fourth place. The top 5 popularity in the country is closed by the banned Russian "Yandex.Browser".
Mobile Front and Hidden Processes
In the mobile browser market, concentration is even higher. The combined share of Chrome and Safari reaches almost 92%. At the same time, Chrome confidently outpaces Safari, which is a pre-installed solution on iPhone smartphones, demonstrating that users often choose alternative solutions even on mobile devices.
Chrome users have recently noticed hidden changes in the browser's operation. The system began to silently download a 4-gigabyte AI model to the hard drive. This is the Gemini Nano, which is necessary to launch new neural network functions directly inside the browser.
The Price of Performance
Despite its popularity, Chrome faces criticism regarding resource consumption. Recent tests showed that it is one of the most "greedy" browsers on the market. For computers with limited RAM, using Chrome may be undesirable. In comparison, the little-known browser Whale turned out to be the most economical in terms of memory consumption; it has not yet managed to win over a mass audience but offers an alternative for weak systems.
