In the early hours of June 2, work continues in Kyiv to clear up the aftermath of a massive attack that occurred during the night. The situation in the capital remains tense: rescuers are extinguishing fires, while energy workers are restoring damaged networks. According to the latest data, the death toll from the tragedy has reached six people.
Number of casualties and injured
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported an increase in the number of fatalities in his Telegram channel. Initially, the confirmed figure was five people, but later it became known about a sixth victim who died in a medical facility. As a result of the attack, 66 people were injured. Among the wounded are three children aged three, 11, and 17.
Ekateryna Pop, spokesperson for the Kyiv City Military Administration, clarified details regarding medical care for the injured:
- About 40 people were hospitalized in the capital's hospitals.
- 13 injured people, including two children, received outpatient care.
- Medical personnel provided assistance on-site to the rest, including one child.
Energy collapse and emergency services operations
Significant damage was inflicted on the energy infrastructure. Two energy sector workers are among those affected. Despite the damage, specialists managed to promptly restore electricity supply for 110,000 households.
The most serious power outages were recorded in the Sviatoshyn, Obolon, and Shevchenkivskyi districts. Emergency crews continue restoration work to bring power back to another 30,000 residents left without resources due to network damage.
Cleanup of strike aftermath
Employees of the State Emergency Service (SES) continue working at sites that sustained the most damage. Fires continue to be extinguished at certain locations, while debris clearance is already underway in other areas.
During the night operations, rescuers managed to extrude a resident of one of the damaged buildings who had been trapped in their own apartment. After the fires are extinguished, the next phase of cleanup will begin, involving additional emergency services. The main task is to make homes habitable as quickly as possible.
Scale of the attack
During the night and morning of June 2, Russian forces struck Ukrainian territory using 73 missiles and 656 attack drones. According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, eight hypersonic 'Zircon' missiles were among the weapons used. This marked a record for their simultaneous use since the start of the full-scale war.
Unlike previous massive attacks where Kyiv remained the primary target, this time strikes hit several regions simultaneously, including Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Poltava oblasts.
