The football world has been shaken by sad news: Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38. The death of one of Europe's most promising referees occurred against the backdrop of the most difficult period in his career, marred by a major scandal and subsequent suspension from international duty.

The shadow of accusation and pressure

The last months of Dieperink's life were spent under colossal psychological pressure. It all began in April of this year, when London police detained the referee in one of the hotels. He was suspected of sexual assault on a minor. However, British law enforcement authorities soon closed the criminal case due to lack of sufficient evidence and did not bring any official charges against the referee.

Dieperink himself insisted on his innocence and emphasized his full cooperation with the investigation. "It is very upsetting that I was groundlessly accused. From the very beginning, I fully cooperated with the police investigation, and I was also immediately maximally open to FIFA, UEFA, and the Royal Dutch Football Association," he stated at the time.

Exclusion from the World Cup referee list

Despite the case being closed, the reputational blow was crushing. In May, FIFA decided to exclude the Dutchman from the list of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) who were supposed to work at the 2026 World Cup. This decision was a heavy blow for the referee, as he was considered one of the best specialists in his field.

"It is a pity that FIFA decided not to appoint me to the World Cup, I am of course disappointed by this," Dieperink noted, commenting on his suspension.

Final days and circumstances of death

The causes of the sudden death of the 38-year-old referee remain unknown. The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) is not disclosing details, however, local media, in particular the publication De Telegraaf, report that the police have already begun an investigation into the circumstances of the death. Investigative actions were carried out at the home where Dieperink lived.

Despite his difficult emotional state and the loss of the chance to perform at the World Cup, the referee continued to work on the pitch. He officiated his last match very recently — last Saturday, July 11. This was a friendly match between the Dutch club Go Ahead Eagles and the Cypriot Apollon.

A career cut short at its peak

Rob Dieperink was considered one of the most authoritative specialists in the Netherlands. In professional football, he worked for more than 15 years, officiating matches in the top division Eredivisie since 2017. He has officiated 284 professional matches.

Dieperink regularly received high-level international appointments. In particular, he worked as a video referee at Euro 2024 matches, as well as officiated the 2024 UEFA Conference League final. His passing is not only a personal tragedy but also a serious loss for the refereeing corps of world football.
