In Kyiv, scenarios for ending the conflict are being discussed, and the format of direct negotiations is back on the agenda. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during a joint briefing with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin, outlined specific plans to organize a trilateral meeting of representatives from Ukraine, the US, and Russia.
A key factor in this process was the recent communication between the Ukrainian leader and representatives of the American side. On July 22, Zelensky held a telephone conversation with special envoys of US President Donald Trump — Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. During the discussion, new proposals were formulated, which the American side intends to discuss with Russian partners.
Deadline: before the onset of autumn
Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the urgency of the issue. According to him, the trilateral meeting must take place before autumn. The head of state noted that Ukraine is ready for dialogue right now: if the decision depended solely on Kyiv, negotiations could have started back in July.
"I think there will be a trilateral meeting then. Of course, all this needs to be done before autumn. I believe we need to work persistently on this," quotes the president, RBC-Ukraine correspondent.
The initiative to resume negotiations is directly linked to the current situation on the front. Earlier, also on July 22, Zelensky stated that Ukraine's military successes and strikes on Russian territory are creating a "toxic atmosphere" around Vladimir Putin, which even his closest allies admit. It is this context, according to Kyiv, that should become a catalyst for accelerating the diplomatic process.
Global context and Iran
In addition to issues directly related to the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, the Middle East direction is also in the focus of the US. Zelensky noted that the US administration is focusing on the situation in Iran.
"In Iran, it is not such a cease fire as everyone wanted," the president said, meaning that the ceasefire regime there does not meet the expectations of the international community. Despite the complex geopolitical situation and the lack of desired results in other regions, the Ukrainian leader assured that Kyiv would continue to fight for a diplomatic resolution of the conflict.
