On August 12, 2026, as part of the European Aquatics Championships, Ukrainian swimmer Ihor Troyanovsky demonstrated an outstanding performance in the 100-meter butterfly event. Although the direct path to the final eight was closed, his performance in the semi-finals became one of the most notable events for the Ukrainian team at the current tournament. The athlete managed to break into the top ten swimmers on the continent, remaining in the status of a reserve swimmer.
The Path Through the Qualification "Sieve"
Ihor Troyanovsky's path to the semi-final stage was not easy and required maximum concentration. In the preliminary qualifying round, the Ukrainian recorded a time of 51.98 seconds. This result was enough only for fifth place in his heat, which allowed him to take the last qualifying spot, 16th overall, among all preliminary heats. This situation placed the athlete in a difficult position: any slip-up in the semi-finals could have meant the end of his participation in the tournament.
Battle with the Olympic Champion
In the semi-finals, Troyanovsky started in the first heat, taking the outermost lane. The composition of his opponents was exceptionally strong: the heat included current leaders in world swimming, including the Hungarian Kristof Milak — the reigning Olympic champion. The start was difficult: the Ukrainian covered the first half of the distance cautiously, turning at the wall in only eighth position. However, it was in the second half of the distance that Troyanovsky revealed his potential.
The Final Sprint and the Result
In the final 50 meters, the swimmer made an impressive sprint, which allowed him to rise to third place in the overall standings. Despite the heroic effort, at the very finish he touched the wall sixth with a time of 51.57 seconds. Based on the combined results of both semi-final heats, Ihor took the final 10th place. This did not allow him to qualify directly for the final, where the European Championship medals will be contested.
Reserve Status and Chances for the Final
Despite the lack of a direct pass to the final, Troyanovsky retains theoretical chances to participate in the decisive heat. He remains in the status of a "reserve" (backup participant). In order to reach the final start, one of the main participants must withdraw or be disqualified. In this case, an additional round may take place, where Troyanovsky may have to fight for a spot with Polish swimmer Ksawery Masjuk.
Progress at the Tournament and Context
Reaching the top 10 in the 100-meter distance was a significant achievement for Ihor Troyanovsky at the current European Championships. This discipline became his second at the EC-2026. Previously, in the shorter 50-meter butterfly distance, the athlete failed to overcome the qualification sieve, taking only 38th place. Thus, the result on the "hundred" demonstrates significant progress and the swimmer's adaptation to the tournament requirements. At the same time, it is worth noting that the Ukrainian national team failed to qualify in the mixed relay at Euro-2026, which makes Troyanovsky's performance one of the few bright spots in the team's overall tally.
