US President Donald Trump, during a meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, announced a decision that could radically change the situation with Ukraine's air defense. Washington intends to grant Kyiv the right to produce Patriot air defense systems.
Technology Transfer and Confidence in Capabilities
The American leader did not hide the details of future cooperation. According to him, the US will not only transfer equipment but will also ensure full technological exchange. "A little bird whispered to me that we will give them the right to make Patriots, we will show them how to make them," Trump stated.
Although the US President acknowledged that creating such systems is "a very technically complex thing," he expressed full confidence that Ukrainian industry would "quickly cope" with this task. Trump emphasized that the necessary capacities will be created to implement the project, and American companies will come to Ukraine to organize production.
Strategic Importance of Air Defense
During the conversation, Trump analyzed the current situation with the protection of Ukraine's skies. He noted that having a sufficient number of Patriot systems from the very beginning of the conflict would have allowed Kyiv to be fully protected from missile strikes. "We have Patriots, but they need them too. We can give them something. But I think they will be able to produce them quickly," added the American president.
This statement became a response to the acute problem facing Ukraine. Defense Ministry Advisor Serhiy Flesh Beskrestnov previously pointed out a critical shortage of missiles for intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. According to him, countries bordering Russia, including Germany, are not in a hurry to transfer their stocks, considering the threat from the east high and preserving resources for their own defense.
Kyiv's Reaction and Negotiations
Washington's initiative fully aligns with the plans of the Ukrainian leadership. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga previously reported on negotiations with international partners to obtain licenses for the production of anti-ballistic systems. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in turn, confirmed that strengthening air defense and supplying Patriot systems are key issues in his dialogue with Donald Trump, including within the framework of the summit in Turkey.
The transition from simply receiving aid to localizing production could become a turning point in ensuring Ukraine's security, allowing the country to independently replenish stocks of defense means in the conditions of an ongoing conflict.
