US President Donald Trump has officially confirmed the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Iran. This has become a key event in the week's diplomatic agenda, sparking widespread resonance in global media.
Signing in Versailles: how it happened
The deal was signed at the Palace of Versailles. Trump made a statement to journalists immediately after dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron: "It is signed." In the presence of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Macron, the document was formalized on paper, accompanied by applause from those gathered.
A White House spokesperson, in a comment to Fox News, clarified that a photograph of the signed agreement was immediately sent to Iran and the intermediary countries to bring the document into force. Later, footage of the ceremony was published on the administration's page on the social network X.
Timeline: from electronic version to final
The process of concluding the agreement developed rapidly and included several stages:
- Sunday: According to Reuters, the parties signed the deal in electronic format. The signatures were placed by US Vice President JD Vance and Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bakher Kalibaf. This took place in the presence of Trump.
- Wednesday, June 17: Donald Trump himself and the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, signed the document. Initially, contradictory information circulated in the media regarding the format of the signature, but it was later confirmed that Trump signed the paper version.
Cancellation of ceremony in Geneva and new deadlines
It was previously planned that the official ceremony would take place on Friday, June 19, in Switzerland. However, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the signing of the deal and announced that the ceremony in Geneva was cancelled. At the same time, negotiation groups will continue to work in the Swiss capital.
According to Axios sources, the parties have already discussed the start of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program. The official text of the memorandum, published by the US on June 17, consists of 14 points. Its publication occurred after protests caused by the fact that the content of the agreement was kept secret until the moment of signing.
60 days to end the war
The signing of the memorandum launches an important countdown. Now the US and Iran have 60 days to agree on a final document on ending the war. During this period, key negotiations on the nuclear program should begin.
Donald Trump has already voiced tough conditions: if a final deal is not reached within this period, the US will resume attacks on Iran.
