US President Donald Trump expressed the view that ending the conflict in Ukraine should be the result of direct efforts by Kyiv and Moscow, without mandatory initial intervention from Washington. This became known during a press conference where the American leader answered a question about the need for the parties to take the first step before the US joins the negotiations.
"Let them deal with it"
Commenting on the situation, Trump stated that he does not object to the parties starting a dialogue on their own. According to him, it is the US that has brought the participants of the conflict to a position where the issue must be resolved between them. "I think it will be resolved. We are approaching the moment when the issue between Russia and Ukraine must be settled," the president emphasized.
The US leader also noted that he believes in the imminent end of the war, adding that this conflict should never have started.
Zelensky's initiative and the proposal for a ceasefire
Trump's statement came against the backdrop of active diplomatic steps by Kyiv. On the eve of the event, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, published a letter addressed to the Russian leadership. In it, the head of the Ukrainian state emphasized that Russia will not be able to establish control over the Donbas this year and called for the end of hostilities through negotiations.
As an interim step, Zelensky proposed the introduction of a ceasefire on the principle of "stay where we stand." This initiative was voiced against the backdrop of the fact that the attention of the US has partially shifted to the situation with Iran, which, according to Kyiv, requires accelerating possible decisions.
Reaction of the parties to the proposal for negotiations
Donald Trump reacted positively to the Ukrainian initiative. He noted that he welcomes the discussion of a possible meeting of the parties and emphasized that Washington has made significant efforts to create the conditions necessary for such a dialogue.
At the same time, the Russian leadership does not yet see the point in a personal meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky. However, conditions were voiced under which such a meeting could take place, which leaves room for further diplomatic work.
