A serious diplomatic crisis is brewing in relations between Washington and Jerusalem. It has become known that the United States has categorically refused Israel's request to review the text of the memorandum of understanding, which is scheduled to be signed with Iran this Friday in Switzerland. Thus, the Israeli leadership remains in the dark regarding the full details of the agreement, which could radically alter the balance of power in the Middle East.
Secrecy from an Ally
The decision to withhold information from a key regional partner came as a surprise. US President Donald Trump had previously promised journalists that he would personally hold a press conference and read the document "word for word." However, the exact date for the announcement of the text has not yet been named, and access to it for the Israeli side has been blocked.
Although the official details of the agreement have not yet been released, Iranian media have already circulated information about the 14 points of the memorandum. Among the most controversial conditions are:
- Complete lifting of all sanctions against Iran.
- Lifting the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and opening it for shipping.
- Unfreezing Iranian assets worth $24 billion.
- Development of an American program to rebuild Iran worth $300 billion.
- Withdrawal of Israeli troops (IDF) from southern Lebanon.
Conflict of Positions on Lebanon
The clause regarding the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Lebanon has become a stumbling block. Hezbollah leaders stated that Iran has given guarantees: the agreement will not be signed if the withdrawal of Israel is not recorded in it. In response, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant firmly stated that the IDF will not leave Lebanon, following the policy of the Defense Minister and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Speaking at the G7 summit, Donald Trump also touched upon this issue, stating that the war in Lebanon has dragged on too long. He proposed that Syria take on the task of controlling Hezbollah, noting that they would handle it better. The US President emphasized that, despite good personal relations with Netanyahu, the Israeli leader must "respect Lebanon more".
Threats and Guarantees
Contrary to rumors of massive investments, Trump denied reports of funding for Iran, calling the agreement "fair." He stated that the US will not invest in Iran but reserves the right to access the country in the future if necessary. At the same time, the US President issued a stern warning to Tehran: if Iran attempts to create or acquire nuclear weapons, "the gates of hell will open over them".
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed that the ceasefire in Lebanon and other points of the memorandum will come into force on Friday immediately after the official signing ceremony in Switzerland. The document will serve as the basis for broader negotiations, including Iran's nuclear program, which are expected to conclude with a final agreement within 60 days.
